German Design Council report on their participation in the first London Design Biennale 7-27 September 2016, whose theme is ‘Utopia by Design’The first London Design Biennale will provide a stage for over 30 countries at Somerset House in September. Around the theme 'Utopia by Design' the countries will be united in a global exhibition exploring the role of design in our collective futures.

The German Design Council, together with the Foundation Deutsches Design Museum, are organising the German pavilion on the initiative and with the full support of the German Foreign Office and the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy.

Konstantin Grcic curated Germany's installation at the global design event. Split into two spaces — one light and the other dark — Konstantin Grcic's "Utopia Means Elsewhere", explores the psychological, subjective roots of the idea of utopia. The piece takes its title from a quote by John Malkovich that is set in classic typography on an outsized easel in a brilliant white space.

Famous international museum and organisations, e.g. the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum (USA), DAMnNation (Belgium), Austria Design Net (Austria) and the Victoria & Albert Museum (UK) will implement their countries’ presentations.
